Devin the Dude — Laid Back Music
Better known as Devin the Dude, Devin Copeland is a Houston-based hip hop artist. Devin was born June 4, 1970 and is best known for his unique style, his long career with Rap-A-Lot Records, and his 2002 hit "Lacville '79". His friendship with his fans has also made him an underground favorite. Although he rarely makes it to the stage on time, he always shares his swishas and cigarettes with his audience.
Devin started his hip hop career as a member of the Odd Squad, which later changed their name to the Coughee Brothaz, a group of hip hop artists signed to Rap-A-Lot Records. Rap-A-Lot is best known for being home of hip hop artists like the Geto Boys, Scarface, and Too Much Trouble. Devin later joined Scarface's Facemob, and went solo in 1998. Devin the Dude ended his relationship with Rap-A-Lot Records in 2008 after 15 years because the label did not renew his contract. Later in 2008, Devin signed with indie record label Razor & Tie. He is currently being distributed by E1 Entertainment. Devin the Dude mixtapes are also currently being released on independent labels.
Although he was a critical success, Devin the Dude has not achieved any success in the mainstream market but continues to be a favorite underground hip hop artist. He was called "A brilliant oddball with a spaced-out flow" by the New York Times. Devin has also been called "Rap's best-kept secret" and "Your favorite rapper's favorite rapper."
